As one of my 6 month goals, I hope to learn Khmer and hold a decent conversation after an intensive learning period.
I’ve always had it in my head that I suck at languages and that I can never learn. But, after a little motivation from Tim Ferris and the 80/20 rule, I thought I may be able to ‘hack’ learning Khmer and in the process prove myself wrong and learn a valuable new skills.
To help with this process, Ferris suggest taking these 12 common phrases:
- The apple is red
- It is Johns apple
- I gave John the apple
- He gives it to John
- She gives it to him
- We give him the apple
- Is the apple red?
- The apples are red
- I must give it to him
- I want to give it to her
- I’m going to know tomorrow
- I can eat the apple
Then translating them into the target language. This allows for the perfect starting point as these 12 sentences cover basic grammatical structures of the language you’re trying to learn.
The logical next step for me would be to begin learning a bunch of common words and then exchanging / building upon these 12 sentences.
I’m going to give it a go, alongside taking some lessons and see how it goes.
Wish me luck on one of my 6 month goals.
